The objective of regulators of medicines is to make sure that the medicines’ supply chain is regulated and robust to ensure the highest standards are adhered to and that medicines of a high quality reach consumers.  This greatly reduces the risk of counterfeit medicines from reaching patients through the regulated pharmaceutical supply chain, thereby protecting the public. However, a growing number of people are now purchasing their medicines over the internet through online pharmacies or internet sales sites, thereby bypassing the more secure regulated supply chain with the end result that they are exposing themselves to a possible greater risk of taking medicines of inferior quality or even worse counterfeit medicines with detrimental consequences to their health.  The World Health Organisation estimates that 50% of medicines available from sites which conceal their physical address are counterfeit. To date there have been no counterfeit medicines that managed to penetrate the legal supply chain for the public in Malta.

While the internet can be an invaluable source of information, it is always best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have concerns about your health. In particular, medicines that require a prescription should only be used under the care and supervision of a doctor.  Malta is actively engaged in the discussions at EU level where regulation of this area are being planned.
